3dsmax 2010 scene file – FumeFX Dust Kick

The 2010 Olympics are in full swing here and I am loving every second of it! So much to see and so much to do with thousands of people from all over the world! I will be here until June so my freelance availability is low currently but come June I will be ready to rock again! So if you have any projects coming up in the next few months be sure to let me know as I will be looking for new work once I leave Vancouver.

The basic setup uses a relatively simple Pflow setup to give a swirling mass of particles that can be used by FumeFX to create velocities for the smoke. The video you see below uses the same particle setup with a few adjustments to particles speed and spacewarp influence. (Spacewarps used are Vortex and Wind with some turbulence.) As you can see with the rendered tests below, just by changing a few key parameters in FumeFX gives us the ability to create some very different looking effects.

Growing up through the late 70′s and onto the 80′s subjected me to many things as a child; sounds, sights, color, and thoughts, which still influence me to this day. Whether it was flipping through my uncle’s record collection and admiring the album art, watching countless movies, or getting up early every Saturday morning to watch my ‘weekly allotment of television credits’ in the form of cartoons, there were certain colors, shapes, and forms that stuck with me.

Browsing through the art of James White (Signalnoise) takes me back to to that time and place. A place and time where art was great because it was cool, fun, and looked great. No hidden messages; no implications; no bull… just art for the sake of creating wicked looking art.

James recently won Best Graphic Designer here in Halifax and I want to take this time to congratulate his work and his efforts. Congrats buddy! It’s a well deserved award and it’s about time!

Please pardon any broken links or missing pages; I still have a bit of work to do. I have some new tutorials that are almost ready to go; they just have to be converted to vimeo format so people can view them easier. Over the past year I have done a few talks at schools/events where I have touched on film and television pipelines and methods of getting things done, and over the coming months I hope to bring some of that knowledge and experience here so people can learn how it’s all done. I also have a bunch of other cool things planned which I will go into at a later date. (Including an online fx database that will enable users to upload/download presets for FumeFX, Pflow Boxes 1,2, and 3 etc.. should be cool.)

It was an absolute blast to work with everyone, and once the film is released I will showcase a few of the techniques I used on the film.

I am also working on a new demo reel which is looooooong overdue… last one was cut in 2006 so this one will have completely new material! Lots of cool things to show and I am excited to get it completed. I have been working on some new tutorials; 10 to be exact covering topics from fume, rayfire, Box#2, After Effects, and a few other cool ideas.

Look for the new site to go live sometime in mid-October.

I am also strainging to get my portfolio up-to-date with some of the newer projects I have worked on over the past year or so.  Getting this new site fully up and running has taken longer than expected but because of work I haven’t had much time to devote towards it. I have uploaded a few new pieces to my Flickr page which can be viewed here.  The pieces were created using 3dsmax particles, vray,  and some nifty tricks in photoshop.
